SPA Lesson/Skill Development Opportunities

 

 The following information briefly describes the levels of instruction and skill development opportunities offered to SPA members (600 plus) and to those considering membership.                     

 

Intro. Lesson: A one-time lesson which allows non-SPA members to experience hitting balls, score keeping/basic rules and simple skills such as dink, serve and volley.  Lessons are at the Preserve and a $10 fee is required as well as completion of the Release of Liability form before instruction begins.

Assisted Play (AP):
   Introduction to the basic pickleball strokes - serve, return, dinks, etc. - continued experience in score keeping and basic rules.  It is possible for participants to be given a 2.0 SPA rating and advanced to the Advanced Assisted Play Lessons (AAPL).  Lessons are Thursdays at the Preserve for SPA members at the Recreation level with no accompanying fee.

Advanced Assisted Play Lessons (AAPL):
  Class members will participate in drills designed to improve skills in the basic strokes; basic strategies will be introduced. Participation will be limited to 10 sessions (retroactive to January 17).  Lessons are Wednesdays at the Ridgeview courts.  It is possible for participants to be given a 2.5 SPA rating. AAPL is designed for SPA members at the 2.0 or 2.5 levels with no accompanying fee.

3.0, 3.25 Class:
   Designed to help 3.0 and 3.25 rated SPA members improve their skills to a 3.5 level.   Shot selection, directional hitting and strategies are the key concepts taught with continued emphasis on improving basic strokes.  The class meets once a week for 4 weeks and is currently limited to 12 participants.   For 3.0 and 3.25 rated SPA members only with no accompanying fee.

3.5 Class:  Designed to help 3.5 rated SPA members improve their skills to a 4.0 level.  Main emphasis is on developing a "soft" game via a quality 3rd shot ("drop" shot).  Techniques include developing one's backhand, hitting to opponent's backhand, strategies for playing against hard hitters and court positioning.  The class meets once a week for 4 weeks and is currently limited to 12 participants.   For 3.5 SPA rated players with no accompanying fee.
